Sunday Seven...Quick Trip to the Beach

1. Just got back from a quick trip to Virginia Beach. We left Thursday afternoon and had a great time visiting with my Mom, seeing other ministries, visiting with old friends and just getting away for awhile.

2. We were able to visit Operation Blessing which is a part of the Christian Broadcasting Network. They have three huge warehouses and distribute 75 to 150 tons of products every week. We were very impressed by the people and the organization. We provide clothing to them that they distribute to other countries.

3. My Mom cracks me up! She had a list of items for Mr. Wonderful to do while we were home. Some of them very simple such as removing addresses from her email address book and making the green light stop flickering on the TV. We also replaced some azaleas bushes in the back yard. We were able to go to a senior banquet with her and go to church with her. I know she gets lonely so it was good to be able to spend some time with her.

4. Just heard that our little Munchkin is sick. It's so hard to be so far away when your baby is sick. It's hard on her momma and really hard on her long distance Diva. Just yesterday she was out playing at the park on one of their first spring days.

5. So glad, my good buddy Floozie is starting to feel so much better. She got off some medication abruptly and it really messed up her blood pressure and her whole system.
Sandy is one of the sweetest, kindest people I know and she rarely lets anyone know how she really is feeling. She has had a really hard month with mood swings, crying, fatigue,
and just plain feeling lousy.

6. Our cats JJ and Lucy were really glad to see us. I'm sure they got lonesome with out us to entertain them. A big shout out to neighbor and good friend Beckie for feeding the cats and loving on them while we were gone.

7. The lilacs are in bloom now. We have two big bushes that are in bloom under my window where my computer is located. I love smelling their fragrance . I love the sight and smell of spring.

It's good to be back home to my own bed and familiar surroundings. Long weekends really give us a needed break and a little perspective. Hope your week goes well.

Meet Woody

A few days ago Mr. Wonderful came in from putting wood in our wood burning furnace and told me that there was a baby ferrel kitten living in our wood pile. He had seen it the day before when he lifted up the tarp over the wood .

At first she wouldn't let him touch her but she was getting used to seeing him now as he normally puts wood in the furnace twice a day.

I was given strict instructions not to go out and see her because he knew what a softie I am and how easily I can become attached to a kitten. He reminded me that we already have two cats and dog and how easily I could become the "mad cat lady of New Hope!"

So being the obedient wife that I am I promptly ignored him and went out to meet Woody (named by Mr. Wonderful because she lives in the wood pile.) Of course Woody immediately thought that I was her mama and cuddled up the moment I picked her up. She was so small...all eyes and tail. I instantly bonded and began to think of ways to ease her into the family. Woody is a white cat with just a hint of grey on her fore head ( her markings look like some one dropped a few speckles of grey paint on her by accident!)

I put her down to go get my camera and every time I took a step she was right there under my feet. I would put her down and run only to see her scampering behind me as fast as her little legs could carry her. I was hopelessly hooked. I picked her up and played with her for about an hour and made several phone calls to some of my equally softhearted friends about adopting a kitten.

By the time Mr. Wonderful arrived home I had worn her out and she was sleeping in a cardboard box with a big fluffy towel tucked under the tarp so mama cat would be able to find her. My neighbor assured me that he had seen mama cat carrying her crew into various places of safety and not to be surprised if she was not there in the morning.

Woody was still in her box the following morning. Mr. Wonderful assured me that she was fine and looked healthy and ran out to greet him. We were very busy with volunteers this weekend but I heard Mr. Wonderful tell someone we had 2 and half cats. (Hmm...I thought look who's the softie now.)

Yesterday evening when Mr. Wonderful came in from the wood pile he brought in the brown fluffy towel and told me gravely that Woody wouldn't be needing it any longer. At first I thought he was telling me that the mama cat had moved her some where else but I could tell by his face that the little kitten was dead. He buried her under the small weeping willow tree that I can see from my office window.

So here I sit, eulogizing a small female kitten who entered our life briefly and brought immeasurable joy for a very short time. Her small life had an impact on me and it is fitting that she is buried under a weeping willow.

Monday Memories....Moving Misery!

Mr. Wonderful and I have moved many times. We have never had professional movers help us. Usually we have done the majority of the work ourselves and some times we have had help from friends and family.

Our first move was hard and traumatic. We moved all our furniture from a 4th floor walk-up apartment. We had a piano hook on the side of the building and had decided that it would be easier to lower Mr. Wonderful's books with it. It rained on the day we moved. It rained so hard that by the time we were able to lower a heavy box of books the rain had soaked through the box and it fell apart scattering books every where.

It was late by the time we loaded up the truck and headed to Columbia, South Carolina. It was still raining and at times visiblility was limited. I was driving our loaded pickup truck that had a camper shell . Our cat "Rotten" did not like to travel, did not like closed confined spaces and especially hated rain. He was riding in the back of the truck inside the camper shell.

The rain continued and our poor kitty must have felt like he was riding inside a "snare drum" I could hear him crying an angry mad pitiful cry as if to say...."Let me out of here." Mr. Wonderful and I got separated in traffic and visibility continued to get worse. We finally stopped for the night at a Holiday Inn.

Most motels have access to the rooms from the outside of the building. This particular motel did not. When we checked in, it was very late and no one was in the lobby or the elevator so it was easy to slip our "overly distraught" cat into our room without anyone noticing.

We intended to check out early so as not to run into guests or employees on our way out with our contraband cat. Of course we overslept .....Mr. Wonderful went downstairs and paid for our room and made several trips to the truck to carry our luggage.

To get our cat out, I wrapped "Rotten" in some white sheets (as he was a white cat) that I held next to me tightly when we entered the elevator. I quietly petted him under the sheets hoping he would not freak out in the elevator. Of course the elevator stopped on every floor and on every floor people entered with suitcases. I kept petting him hoping we could get out of the hotel without being discovered.

He was as docile as a lamb. I did notice people giggling as they left the elevator but I figured they were just happy people getting ready to finish their journey. As I got out of the lobby breathing a sigh of relief, I looked down and discovered Rotten's tail swishing back and forth clearly visible from beneath the sheet.

Guess I didn't fool anyone but me.

Monday Memories.....GI Joe

Baby JJ
Originally uploaded by Momma B.

When our children were 4,6, and 8 they were able to witness our cat having kittens. They were rather amazed that the mama cat knew what to do and were intrigued by the kittens.

The mama cat had four kittens. Two were white and grey, one was grey, and one was an orange marmalade color. As the kittens grew the children became attached to them and naturally wanted to keep all of them.

Each of the children picked their favorite kitten and promptly named them. Boy Wonder was especially fond of the orange marmalade kitten and named him "G.I. Joe" after his favorite cartoon program.

When the kittens were big enough to be weaned, we put out "Free Kittens to Good Homes" posters in our neighborhood. It wasn't long till people were coming to look at the kittens and one by one they started going to their new home. All except one...

You got it, the orange marmalade kitten. It seems that every time someone came to look at the kittens G.I. Joe could never be found.

We soon discovered that every time someone came to look at the kittens our son would hide "G.I. Joe " in the toy box and close the lid. He would then sit on the lid until the strangers left with another kitty.

We laughed at Boy's determination to keep his cat and in the end, when we moved some weeks later G.I. Joe moved with us. "Joey" was a good cat and lived to be a ripe old age.

Our current cat is also an orange marmalade cat. I named him "JJ" much to the horror of my children.

" Why did you name him that? they demanded.

" It's short for "Joey Junior", I responded.

Their response was a unanimous "Aww...that's so cute!"

What I Miss

They look so cute when they are asleep

There is supposed to be a picture of sleeping kitties? If you are reading this and don't see sleeping kitties I assure you that it is not one of those pictures that if you stare at it for a long time sleeping kitties pop out at you. It simply means that I'm closer to my goal of putting a picture in but not there yet.

I seem to be a point and click kind of girl! My learning curve seems to be going downward in a rapid spiral. I have learned new skills at work and am rapidly becoming the PR person.

Persistence seems to be a virtue that I am learning to develop as I get pulled away time and time again to do other projects. Seems like I spend most of my time just putting out fires! That probably explains why after 50 years the only toy that survived my childhood is my Smokey the bear!

I am so looking forward to the weekend. This will be the last whole weekend I have off for the next 6 weeks. I enjoy having groups come and help at the mission and I'm really good at greeting them and making them feel at home even when I wish they were! But at the end of the day I still go home with out any friends to call up and stay "What to catch a movie with me?"

I really miss my girls.....nothing like catching a Chick Flick with two cute chicks. I always get great service at the hard ware store whenever my girls are there....the guys seem to come out of the woodwork!

I miss Boy Wonder, he always keeps me laughing and cleans up any left overs.

I miss going out to lunch with a girlfriend, going to Walmart or Target, even getting overpriced coffee at Barnes and Noble. In some ways I really miss my old life.....but mostly I miss me! I've changed so much that I hardly know me anymore.

I think by getting the two cats that I've chosen cats over friends. Lots of people have allergies to cats.....but if that was the choiceI guess I'm glad I have the cats and Spot. They are always glad to see you and love to curl up on your chest or even your face. They even like you when you step on them because they are wrapped around your feet. When you are upset they cuddle closer and never say bad things about you.

Speaking of Cats.....I need to go feed them. Hope you enjoyed the picture. If not maybe next time I'll succeed!

Lucy and JJ

Today was full of promise.... lots to do and I ended up playing with kittens most of the day. I figure cleaning, dusting, putting away Christmas decorations can wait.... the kittens will only be little once, so I played with them. They get so much pleasure out of bits of string or paper, and they love cuddling on your chest to sleep. Soon they will be independent and a bit arrogant and will definitely have attitude. Right now, they are little and lively and curious yet still skittish and needing protection. Too bad kittens grown up to be cats, puppy grow up to be dogs and children grow up to be adults.

Fly lady will have to wait till tomorrow!

My kitties won't wait.
