Something to Think about!

You know you are a slave to your scale .....

I admit to being obsessive compulsive when it comes to weighing and diets. I know deep in my heart of hearts that weighing myself every day is not a good thing. Why should I allow a piece of metal determine my self worth?

I tell myself I do it so I can catch any slip up right away. That it will stop me from destructive behavior.

But as soon as I step on the scale the destructive behavior begins.

If the scale is up.....I'm down.
If the scale in down....I'm up.

Sad.....but true. It's almost like a crystal ball...." Tell me , am I allowed to like myself today?"

Whatever the number, my reaction is often to eat-to celebrate if the news is good and to comfort myself if the news is bad. Whenever I step on the scale, I give my power away. I'm either Rocky on a victory lap or a beached whale trapped on a sand bar.

I know that weighing myself on a daily basis is a form of insanity. I already know what I ate or didn't eat, whether I exercised or indulged in chocolate cake. I know if my jeans are snugger than they were or exactly the same as last week. So why do I go through this ritual dance of stepping on the scale and praying to the god of gravity to make the number less?

Every day I have the power to decide how I feel and how I choose to spend my day- I am allowed to like myself today. I belong here....to experience love, joy, peace, health and connection to people I love. Allow yourself to know what you already know!

Sunday Seven..weight and wait

Sunday Seven....Wait and Weight!

1. I started a new diet and exercise plan this week. I lost four pounds so far.
The new program is the FDA diet pill Alli. It's supposed to keep fat from being absorbed in the body. It is basically an 1800 calorie diet with low fat foods. So far it hasn't been hard at all but basically because of all the summer produce.

2. Wow, Mr. Wonderful and I have really been enjoying fresh fruit this past week. Seems we just can't get enough of apples, bananas, strawberries, grapes, cantaloupe and watermelon. They really have satisfied the sweet cravings.

3. I tried walking in my living room with Leslie. I put in the one mile tape and only got as far as the introduction. Seems Leslie is too fast for my faltering baby steps. So I'll have to wait before I can pick up weights and walk with her. She was still her perky self except I'd swear she was looking judgmentally at me (but then again could be just my imagination!)

4. I had Mr. Wonderful bring my exercise bike into the living room. It's been too hot to cycle on the porch and now that my knee will finally go the full rotation it keeps it from locking up . I still have to "coax" it a little but it is better.

5. Why does my self esteem have so much to do with my weight? I can really relate to the commercial that shows a woman with a scale chained to her ankle and the Willie Nelson song playing in the background "You were always on my mind!"

6. I've spent a lot of summer waiting. Waiting for my knee to heal, waiting for the doctor or physical therapist, waiting for the court date and now waiting on the insurance company to pay our medical expenses. This Wednesday I'm hoping the surgeon will release me from further visits with him. I'm pretty sure I'll still be in therapy for several more weeks though.

7. Have you ever asked God for something so BIG that if He's not in it you are bound to fail? Well that's where we are right now. Mr. Wonderful applied for a position that he would be absolutely equipped, and fabulous for , but it is entirely out of our hands. We already know that there are already a lot of applications submitted so only God can bring it to pass.

Well that's life in the Daisy Patch this week.... loss of weight and waiting going on. I'm impatient for both to happen. I'm hoping it's the summer heat and mourning over my past eating plan that has gotten me cranky, crabby, and cruel.

Cue the music, dim the lights and exit for another week.

Back in the Saddle Again

It's been one month today since my auto accident. Today we picked up a rental car so I was actually able to go to Curves.

I don't seem to be able to handle a number of problems at the same time so dieting and exercise had been put on the back burner. I'm not good with emotional eating and I've been rather emotional lately.

I just read a very good article here. Here's the jest of it.

This was a wake up call and something I really needed to read.

To really lose weight and keep it off, what you need to understand is not only will you need to eat better and be more active, you’ll need to do it forever. You’ll need to quash your urge for dramatic, instantaneous results.

Instead, you’ll need to be patient. You’ll need to be able to recognize the small achievements you make on this long road. You’ll need to create a motivational reserve so that when you feel like nothing is working or you’re simply tired of making the effort, you’ll be able to bolster yourself back up to stick with your leaner lifestyle.

The magic pill to reap the results you want is consistency.

The way to be consistent with the eating and exercise choices is to wrap
your mind around a whole new perspective. Here are five hard facts that you must know. Use them for a reality check. Read them and then read them again. Let them soak into your subconscious. They’ll help you psych yourself up to stick to a leaner life.

1) You may have to struggle (for a while).
Your first instinct may be to take an all-or-nothing approach. You’ll block out temptation by being strict about exercising and following a very specific food plan. But I can promise you, you won’t have long-term success that way. Instead, you should take it slower and smarter. You will need to make subtle changes in your life rather than drastic, temporary ones. This may feel more frustrating, as you teeter on the edge of discomfort long past the point where you feel motivated to
make a change. But you’ll need to keep making better food choices and prodding yourself to move more when you don’t feel like it. This is where the mental hurdles start. The good news is that once you’ve converted to a lean life, it does become easy. But in the beginning, especially after your first few weeks or months of feeling motivated, it will feel like a struggle, and you will have to push through that rough spot to succeed.

2) You are in this for the long haul.
This is where your mental fortitude comes in. You will need to psych yourself up to keep going when you don’t feel like you are getting any results. Revisit the anecdotes you’ve heard about people who have lost weight. You will notice that those who kept it off stuck with the program. Those who followed a trendy diet and lost oodles of fat, gained it all back when they eventually returned to their normal habits, habits that led to their weight gain in the first place. Notice that people who have successfully kept weight off generally are so busy there’s no time to fall back into old ways. Sure, they may join in on pizza binges, happy hours or cut back on workouts every now and again. But if they are experiencing long-term success with their weight loss, it’s because they are still sticking to healthy habits most of the time.

3You must improve the way you eat, not change it dramatically.

Trying to do too much at once is a recipe for failure because the changes won’t be realistic enough to stick with.Giving up all meat may not be possible if you love steaks and roast chicken. Axing all bread and pasta would be next to impossible to sustain if your family eats lots of Italian food. A fancy health club far from your home or office might look appealing on first blush, but you won’t go to it if it’s too inconvenient. There is no one diet or fitness plan that is perfect for everyone. You’ll need to identify your own eating and exercise patterns and then improve them with minor tweaks.

4) You must move more.
More people diet than exercise. For some reason it’s seems easier to deny yourself food than to get your butt off the couch. Many people ask me if they can get away with dieting but not exercising. The answer? No way.

5) Your body will fail you if you don’t take care of it.

Most people take better care of their cars than they do their bodies. But
every moment that you are not actively doing what your body needs to stay strong and healthy is another moment that you allow it to wither and deteriorate.

Ouch!

I went to Curves this morning to meet Wilma. It was a good workout and all was right with the world until I left.

I was in an car accident as I was crossing the highway. It was entirely my fault and it was quite scary as I hadn't seen the car that hit me till it was too late. I remember talking to Jesus and hitting the gas pedal to see it I could possibly get across the highway before I got hit.

As you can see I wasn't T-boned but did get hit on the passenger rear door. I also found out that my side impact air bag works and I have since had a major attitude adjustment.

The car had to be towed and we are still awaiting to see if it is fixable. No one was hurt....except I tend to cry at unexplainable times, and for no apparent reason. Needless to say, I didn't get into work today.

So for those of you who were hoping that I would work on my negative attitude.....I did! This girl is happy that I'm still in the game and somehow working on my weight doesn't seem like such a big issue any more.

Real Women Have Curves!

Ok, I've been faithfully dragging my body to Curves for almost a month now (weigh-in February 9th). I would love to report that I truly love it and am now hooked on exercise.....NOT!

I go three times a week (even got in trouble at work) have met a lot of people but the rebellious nature in me totally hates being told what to do.

I was really discouraged till I met Wilma. Wilma is Melli without red hair. Wilma has lost 60 pounds over the last 18 months. She went from a size (14 -16 already hate her) to a size (4-6) now I totally hate her. God seems to bring Wilm in just as I'm finishing my workout and the curiosity in me makes me stay to pick her brain. She won't let me pick her brain unless I work out next to her thus making me work twice as hard twice as long. (See, you just can't trust skinny people!)

Wilma is big into visualization. She suggest putting up a picture of yourself when you were the size you want to be (do baby pictures count?). Also putting a picture on the refrigerator of a goal that you are working for. Wilma is a real person and has a real life. She has a growing family and works two jobs, She assures me that there is "no magic pill" and it's nice to work out with a real life success story. Now if only her motivation will rub off.

She challenged me to work out with her all this week. I have to meet her tomorrow too. (I told you that just can't trust skinny people!)

Lottery Winner.

Yep I won the fat lottery!

I got tired of putting one foot in front of the other and making slow progress or no progress at all.

I listened to the voice of "You Deserve A Break Today" and the next thing I knew it was one more day, then one week, then another week.

All my hard won resolve (dissolved). Can I claim Temporary Insanity?, Raging Hormonal Response to Candy Corn? or was it the hefty deposits to my IRA (Irrational Response to Appetite) that led to this break? Can I sue McDonald's for putting their catchy little jingle in my brain that led to being able to jiggle like jello when I walk?

Regardless the reason the results are in and Yes.....I won the fat lottery this week! Woo Hoo, Boo Hoo!I'm finding out that too much of anything is never a good thing.

Unlike most lottery winners.....I'm not having to turn away people who want me to donate out of my abundance. I've not had to change my phone number countless times or have it unlisted. There aren't distant relatives showing up on my doorsteps demanding I give them a fat transplant to save their life. No one has asked me to endorse their product, be a spokes person for them, nor have my children's safety been threatened by being kidnapped for a huge fat ransom.

Sigh! Maybe I should take out an ad in the Newspaper: Free Fat! Well trained, friendly, likes kids, quiet and subtle, never needs to be taken out for a walk! Refills readily available!

Any takers?

Sure I'm in Shape!

Well, after "making my mother proud" by eating all my favorites this weekend...Round is definitely the shape of things here.

My Mom made all my favorites including two of my favorite desserts as well as grilling marinated steaks.

I tried to resign from the clean plate club, but she always asks anxiously, ......"Do they taste alright? I worked all day on getting it just right!"

Ah, yes, guilt, the gift that keeps on giving.

Oh well, Mondays are always "do-over days" around here. Why should today be any different? Pass the salad, please!
