The Long Goodbye has come to an end today. Oreo woke up, drank some water, and decided it was time to cross the rainbow bridge. He wouldn't take his heart medication no matter what deli meat we wrapped them in. It was as if he was saying I'm tired and worn out please let me go. Without his medication, fluid began to accumulate around his heart, and we couldn't stand to see him drown so we took him to our vet to put him down.
Our vet has a tender heart for old dogs and was deeply moved also. We buried him in our backyard alongside other family pets. We miss him and have nothing but sweet memories of a small dog with a big heart.
My sweet Charlie looked at me and said, "Can our next dog not be a senior dog with health problems? " He knows I have a soft spot for senior dogs, so I smiled sweetly and said, " maybe? but I can promise!"
