I went to the orthopedist today to schedule surgery on my left knee. I had talked to him on the phone a few weeks ago while my kids were still here. Since talking with him on the phone I have had some time to do some research on ACL repairs and the amount of physical therapy and healing time in general.
Frankly, I was surprised at the amount of time and PT needed in this type of repair. (Typical healing time is about 9 months.)
So we had a serious talk about the advantages and disadvantages of repairing everything, versus just repairing the meniscus cartilage in my knee.
The ACL ligament helps stablize the knee when the joint is twisted (such as a basketball player weaving in and out , a downhill skier, or a jumping karate kicker) . Since none of these activities are high on my "to do list" now that I have permanently crossed off "stunt woman" repairing the ACL may not be necessary. ( Not to mention that this Daisy is a little past prime time).
I have been assured that I can still chase after my grandchild, ride a bike, walk, hike, and exercise at Curves without an ACL So for now we have decided on the lesser surgery, followed by physical therapy. Recovery time is about three weeks versus 3 months. We may look into a specialized brace for extra support for hiking, biking or exercising.
I have been assured that I can repair the ACL at a later time if I decide I need more stability. So sorry Melli.....my statue climbing days are gone (but you know I'll always be there to go your bail!)
Surgery is some time Tuesday morning. It is outpatient surgery so I'll be home the same day.
Baba is my hero.....she's up and around and doing wonderfully well since her double knee replacement and I hear Jane is almost ready for the chorus line of high kickers. It all only goes to prove you can't keep a good woman down.

Hi Daisy, I had knee surgery, three years ago for a torn meniscus and it was a breeze.Keep up with all of your PT. and it will heal good.I will keep you in my prayers for surgery.I am doing good and my surgeon does not need to see me again, until 4 more weeks. Love ya, Baba
Your comment about not being able to keep a good woman down...well let me tell you...I am seeing that every day from a good woman. Betty is progressing like you would not believe. She is recovering from this stroke QUICKLY!! Today we even noticed that her mouth is almost back to normal...in the right position..proving your statement...exactly!! You will bounce right back because we women are STRONG!! God just naturally made us this way!! Men can be wimps sometimes!! We are the stronger sex....((smile))...Sandy
In the road to being back to your old self!! My son has had three knee repairing surgeries (all seperate injuries, sports related). He's doing great now. Call me if you have any questions!
You are in my prayers my dear friend!!
sounds like a well thought out decision and I'll bet you feel better know that you have decided and that it is scheduled.
Hi Daisy. Hope you'll have a successful knee surgery. I'll pray that you'll have a comfortable and fast recovery. Take care and God bless.
I think we should form our own dance troop made up of Divas who have had knee surgery!!! Whatcha think?
I will pray for you on Tuesday. You will do just fine.
