What's in a Name?

(Photo taken by Beckie Fitzgerald, friend and excellant local photographer)

Shakespeare may have said, "A rose by another name would smell as sweet." But what do you do when you have exceeded your quota of friends with the same first name?

I seem to collect Sandy's like most people collect sea shells. They come in all sizes, shapes and colors and I collect them from work, church, Bible studies, the gym and even in the neighborhood.

I went to an area Bible Study in another town and who were the first three people I met.? You got it--- Sandy's. Does that mean that Sandy's are just friendly people who seem to be the designated greeters?

I'm sure all three Sandy's were taken back when they introduced themselves and I responded, "I'm sorry, I have already exceeded my Sandy quota. Do you mind if I call you Helga, Winnifred, or Gwendolyn?"

I guess I could distinquish my Sandy's by using their first name and the first letter of their last name. However I already have two Sandy W 's and most times I'm lucky if I remember their first name much less their last. Two of my Sandy's are bloggers so I occasionally call them by their alias. That helps unless you are talking to some one who isn't a blogger and they want to know why you call your friend "Floozie" or "Queen Bee." (After all Christians shouldn't be so judgmental when they are talking about their friends.)

As if the Sandy shuffle isn't confusing enough, I'm dangerously close to exceeding my limit on "Kathy's" and "Becky's". It doesn't seem to help that all my Sandy's have , or are in close relationship to either a Becky or a Kathy.

Conversation last week between a Kathy, Sandy and a Beckie: "I'm just waiting on Becky "(ahh is that, Beckie my neighbor?, Becky my daughter?, or Becky Sandy's daughter?") So you can see how quickly things can get confused.

There is a Beckie, Sandy, and Kathy that are close friends, about the same age and build that all work together and who are constantly called by some other name than their own. They have started to be called the collective "SandyBeckieKathy" or 1 of 3, 2 of 3 and 3 of 3.

Personally, I enjoy having a blogging alias as it identifies how that person knows me immediately. I'm always open to making new friendships but if you are a Sandy be prepared to answer to a new name. (Do you like the name Lilly?)

How do you distinquish friends with the same first name?

Funny you'd use Sandy as an example... as I know about 5 Sandy's myself.

I had a spaniel called Sandy but I've never met a human called one. I know three Steves though. I'm
here from Michele's.

I had to stop and laugh... my best friend in high school was a Sandy. I named Nyssa knowing this was unusual. In spite of everyone mispronouncing Nyssa in Mississippi, it worked fine. She never had anyone else in her classes by the same name..... until this year. William and Mary has another Nyssa. And they were in a class together.... go figure.

That's funny. There seem to be a lot of people my age with my first name, I've noticed.

Hmmmmm.... Once I left my family I've never run into this problem again! (My mother, my sister, and I are all named Mary - remember?) But apparently Marylanders have more names to choose from than y'all do down there in No Hope.... Each of my friends have their own unique individual names! ... or maybe I just don't have enough friends for it to be a problem! ;)
