When Boy Wonder was 4 years old we lived in North Carolina. We were renting a very nice house in the suburbs. It had a big fenced-in back yard but of course, our son preferred to play in the front yard.
Andy was something of an escape artist even at this tender age. He loved being outdoors and loved the mild climate. He especially loved playing in the drainage ditch in front of the house. He would pretend to build a fort and would protect me from "the bad guys" while dad was at work. Dad would often come home for lunch and would sometimes join in his games of imagination.
One day as I opened the door to call them into lunch I noticed Mr. Wonderful had grabbed our son out of the ditch, was ripping off his jeans, and looked like he was giving him the beating of a lifetime. Boy Wonder was screaming and crying his lungs out and Mr. Wonderful's face was red and intense.
"Oh my goodness," I thought. " What could have happened to make Mr. Wonderful spank our child in front of the whole neighborhood? Has Mr. Wonderful lost his mind?"
Being the protective mother I am......I ran toward the street to rescue my boy from the wildly flinging hands of his dad. I was prepared to tackle my hubby to get Boy Wonder away from him.
"Stop I" I screamed while I ran....."Stop hitting him".
Mr. Wonderful was running toward me with the screaming child and basically threw him in my arms while he whipped off the dangling jeans. Boy Wonder had been sitting in a Fire Ant Bed
and the fire ants had crawled up his pant legs and were stinging him.

Both my boys Andy and Dad) got many stings...Boy Wonder stings were on his legs, Mr. Wonderful had stings on his arms and hands from trying to brush the ants off of him.
For those of you not familiar with fire ants. They are very small coopery colored ants. Fire ants inflict a fiery sting, which causes a small blister or pustule to form at the site of each sting after several hours. The blisters become itchy while healing and are prone to infection if broken.
I learned a valuable lesson that day..... Things are not what they look like and even unreasonable acts may have a very logical explanation.

Oh my! I would have thought he was getting a beating if I saw that too. That looks horrible. We have thos e fire ants in Hawaii too. They used to always find my foot whenever I'd be mowing my lawn. Biting me for disturbing their nest.
I'm up too.
Love the moral of your story. But what a terrible thing to happen, poor boy!
Fire ants have been know to kill so your Mr. Wonderful was great in doing as he did. But I too would have thought differently! I agree with Mar you moral is just perfect to this story! Thanks for the share! Mine is up!
Ewww....look at all those ant bites. It's making me itchy already. I see lots of them here especially on mango trees. I know how it is to be bitten by one what more a lot of them. Poor little boy.
The saying Don't judge the book by its cover is really very true here in your story.
Mine is up too.
Fire ants are AWFUL!!! Mr. Wonderful risked his life for the Boy Wonder and you thought he was beating him.....what's up with that???!!!! Just kidding...I would have reacted EXACTLY the same. Boy that "Mama Bear" thing comes out when you think you cub is in danger!

Yes, we know what those little pesky buggers are down here in the South EAST. You want to get them off of you just as FAST as you can!! No wonder Mr. Wonderful was trying to beat them off of him!! Nice to hear your voice today even if it was for only a little bit. We finally found the ruler after 2 toys!! Hmm!! Be ready Gma!! Sandy
Eeek! that sounded no nice at all! I'm glad we don't have that kind of ants over here... Pheewwww.
Goodness just seeing that made me itch.
I know I would be picking at those blisters too.
What you must have gone through during the healing process for those two!
Thanks for visiting my Street Artist post.
Look me up next time you are in NYC I would love to take you around.
Take care,
Frances
Oooh ouchy! I think my brother got in fire ants once while golfing--ended up in the hospital.
Good story telling!
Oh! Red ants are a horror! They all start climbing and then at once send out a signal to bite all at the same time! Yuck!
Owie! That does not sound like fun at all.
What a fun story. How often have I doubted my husband only to find out that he was doing exactly the right thing for the situation that I had no idea about.
